End of Summer Party

On August 23rd, the 368 hardworking members of the Summer Reading Club were invited to celebrate at the End of Summer Party. Now an annual event, the party is an exciting afternoon of carnival games, raffles, prizes and delicious treats. This year, the Children's Room staff also awarded special prizes to two outstanding readers- Jenny Kang and Katherine Kwon who read 1,225 and 1,100 books, respectively. Altogether, Fort Lee children read 10,215 books over the summer! WOW!

Fort Lee Library Idol Talent Show

The Fort Lee Library's first ever Fort Lee Library Idol Talent Competition was a huge success! On August 18th, 12 talented kids entertained the crowd with their performances including singing, dancing, playing instruments and even yoga!

Robert Rogers Puppet Company

Members of the Craft Club took things outside on July 29th to create a bubble wonderland. Using a mix of craft supplies and simple dish-soap bubble solution, the kids made some amazing bubbles!

Alice in Wonderland Tea Party

The Children's Room presented an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party on Sunday, May 2nd. Guests followed Alice (Miss Sarah) and the Mad Hatters (Miss Ellen and Mr Ben) down the rabbit hole and enjoyed stories, snacks and some special surprises.

Dodsworth series by Tim Egan

Also read Dodsworth in New York and Dodsworth in Paris- both just as funny and enjoyable. I love this new series and recommend for all beginner readers and their adults reading along!

Holiday Extravaganza with Magician Mark Zacharia

Abracadabra! On December 16th, Magician Mark Zacharia visited the library for a Holiday magic show. Mark amazed the audience with his tricks and slights of hand and even gave out kazoos to everyone at the end of the performance.

Thanksgiving origami

On Thursday, November 19th, origami artist Ayako Brodek visited the Library for a presentation of Thanksgiving paper folding. Members of the craft club made turkeys, leaves and pumpkins to decorate their homes for the holiday. Gobble gobble!

A ghoulish group of children and adults visited the library on Wednesday, Oct 28th for the annual Halloween Pumpkin Party. The pumpkins were adorned with ribbon, felt, stickers, yarn, and even hair! A candy corn counting contest was held and spooky snacks were served. What a frightful afternoon of fun!

On Wednesday, August 5th, the very talented juggler Jen Slaw came to visit the library. Miss Slaw amazed the audience with her action packed routine, including juggling balls and clubs, spinning plates, ribbon twirling and much more. This book is about pop star Miley Cyrus' life from 6th grade on. It takes place mostly in her home at in the rehearsal studio where she works on her music. I liked this book because it was an autobiography and Miley wrote it herself. It is better than when other people write who are not sure about things. This was my kind of book and the only thing that would have made it better was if kept going to maybe 1,000 pages. I definitely give this book a 10 out of 10.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle by Betty MacDonald

Happy Birthday, Mrs Piggle Wiggle is a book about seven kids who have problems with their parents. The parents call Mrs. Piggle Wiggle for help and she uses potions to solve the problems. The book takes place in a town and the main characters are Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Wag the dog, Lightfoot the cat and Lester the pig. My favorite part was Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's birthday party because on every page something really interesting happens. The only thing I didn't like about the book were all the problems. I thought there were too many problems happening in the story. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 9.

When you join the reading club, you can read anything you want and earn prizes as you do! There's no limit to how much you read or how many prizes you can earn. wow!

The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes, Have Wheels Will Travel by Anne Mazer

This book is about a girl named Abby Hayes who wants new rollerblades instead of using her sister's old ones. It takes place mostly in the park at at Abby's house. I really liked everything about this story especially how Abby earns the money to buy the new rollerblades. I thought this book was amazing and give it a 10 out of 10.

Little Genie Castle Magic by Miranda Jones

Little Genie Castle Magic is a book about a girl named Ali who has her own personal genie. It takes place at Ali's school, house and a place called Popplehoff Castle. This was a funny book because the genie did not know magic very well. The only part I did not like was when the genie went missing, I would have left that part out of the book.

Teddy Bear Tea Party

The 2nd annual Teddy Bear Tea Party was held Sunday, May 3rd at the library. Guests were asked to bring along a favorite teddy bear or other doll. Everyone decorated name tags for themselves and their bears, enjoyed stories read by Miss Sarah, snacked on finger sandwiches & cookies and said hello to the special guest Winnie the Pooh! A wonderful afternoon was had by all.

On Wednesday, April 29th, Flying Ship Productions made a special visit to Fort Lee Library to present "Puss in Hitops." Puss in Hitops is a modern spin on the classic tale of Puss in Boots with lots of songs, laughs and fun!

The Children's Room held a special holiday program on December 15th in the library's meeting room. The children made snowflake and candy cane ornaments, tried their luck pinning the nose on Rudolph and enjoyed music and snacks. Happy Holidays everyone!

Pumpkin Party 2008!

The Children's Room hosted its annual Pumpkin Party on Wednesday, October 29th. While spooky music played, children dressed up their pumpkins with a variety of decorations supplied by the library. Everyone also got a chance to pick an apple from the special Halloween tree for a chance to win a prize. A great time was had by all!

The Lizard Guys!

Lizard Guy "Jungle Jon" visited the library on Wednesday, July 30th and brought along some amazing friends. An African bullfrog, bearded dragon, box turtle, boa constrictor and even a few cockroaches made an appearance at this educational and very funny program.

Mad for Miley by Lauren Alexander

This book is about a girl named Miley Cyrus. It talks about her life and where and when she was born, her likes and desires and her friend and family. There is also a part about her double life as Miley and Hannah Montana. The best part of the book are the pictures and the design. The only thing I didn't like was that it went off topic sometimes. I'd like it if the author wrote Mad for Miley 2! On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this book a 10.

Ivy and Bean by Annie Barrows

Ivy and Bean us a story about two friends who never meant to like each other. This story takes place in the backyards of both Ivy and Bean. I liked this book because in the end Ivy and Bean become friends after all. On a scale of 1 to 10, I gave this book an 8. I really enjoyed it.

Craft Club!

The Spring Craft Club finished up on Thursday, April 10th after 6 weeks of hard work. The group worked on several projects using different materials and methods including shaping clay, origami and sewing. Pale Male, Citizen Hawk of New York City by Janet Schulman

Pale Male is a true story about a hawk who moved in at the top of a building on 5th avenue and the residents who tried to evict him.

The author gives a complete and well written account of the hawk and the protesters' quest to save Pale and his nest. The author also includes a helpful Note at the end to give readers more information about the life of Pale Male. What I really liked about this book, though, were the illustrations. The watercolor pictures depict Pale Male as well as the city of New York beautifully. The dull gray of the buildings and streets provide a great contrast to the bright colors of the wildlife and people of the city. One of the scenes I really loved shows Pale flying high with the reds, yellows and oranges of the autumn trees in Central Park below.

I recommend Pale Male for all ages because it is a story anyone can appreciate and it may just inspire you to learn more about this great animal. Also see: The Story of Pale Male by Jeanette Winter (J598.94 Win)

Owly: Just a Little Blue by Andy Runton

Just a Little Blue is the second book in the Owly comic series written by Andy Runton. Owly is a sweet owl who lives in the forest with his best friend Wormy and some other cute woodland creatures. The author uses very few words and mostly simple symbols and expressions to tell the story. At some points it may be a little difficult to follow the storyline, but readers who pay attention to the details will appreciate how the author tells it. It didn't take me long to finish this heartwarming tale, but in that short time I was totally pulled in! There is a wonderful lesson about friendship, but also forgiveness, sacrifice and bravery. This is a simple story that packs a big punch. Not as well done as my most recent comic favorite, Robot Dreams, but I definitely can't wait to read more Owly tales.

Sewing Club

Members of the sewing club show off their latest creation- handmade pillows. Good work, everyone! Sewing Club is just one of the exciting programs going on this fall in the Children's Room. Keep an eye out for more fun clubs in the future.

The Cute Book by Aranzi Aronzo

The children's room staff has been obsessed with this book since it came in. Just like it's name says, everything in this how-to craft book is cute! The book includes easy to follow instructions for making 19 felt "mascots." Below are the mascots completed by Miss Sarah, Miss Ellen and Miss Arlinda. Keep an eye out for more Aronzo books in the library soon. In the meantime, check out other cute craft projects in Mr. Funky's Super Crochet Wonderful and The Super Duper Art and Craft Activity Book. Suggested for ages 8 and up (all projects require using a needle and thread)

Halloween!

The Children's Room hosted a pumpkin party last Tuesday to celebrate Halloween. Children decorated pumpkins, played a game of Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin and enjoyed spooky music and snacks. Check the FLPL website for more pictures of the event.
